REGULAR SEASON MATCHES & SCORING

  • All matches will be played at the designated tennis centers at 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated and need to be completed by dusk.

  • Coaches should call respective tennis centers to schedule practices & additional games.

  • Five singles matches and two doubles match are played to determine the winner of the match.  Singles matches will be played first followed by doubles. Your line up (singles and doubles) MUST have players arranged (seeded) in order of ability.

  • Line-ups must be exchanged between the coaches before each match. After the exchange, no change in the line-ups are permitted except if after the matches are slated to begin, a player fails to appear, due to unforeseen circumstances, or becomes incapacitated, by becoming ill. A coach can insert an alternate name into the same position of the absent/incapacitated player provided that the game is not in progress. Any player substituted for is barred from playing the rest of that match.

  • The permanent order of singles players must be established prior to the third regularly scheduled match and submitted to the SCIAA Tennis Coordinator.  Any changes in the order of your line-up must be resubmitted to the SCIAA Tennis Coordinator before you play your new line-up in any match.

  • All teams must schedule a minimum of 7 matches to include your league schedule, but excluding tournaments.  You must play each team in your league AT LEAST once.

  • You are only allowed 16 regular season matches. Tournaments count as two matches.

  • Do not schedule matches April 18 - 25.  These dates are reserved for the SCIAA Championship Tournament (and possible rain dates).

  • ENTER MATCH SCORES by noon the following day after the match.     FAILURE TO ENTER MATCH SCORES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS MATCHES NOT PLAYED AND TEAMS WILL BE SUBJECT TO FINES.  It is recommended that both coaches enter scores just in case one coach accidentally forgets.

  • NO-SHOW TEAMS WILL INCUR A FORFEIT FINE AND THE OPPOSING TEAM WILL BE CREDITED WITH THE WIN.

REMINDER:  Coaches should call respective tennis centers to schedule practices & additional games and the winning team coach must report match scores to the Commercial Appeal and the SCIAA Tennis Coordinator.

***WHAT IF A TEAM ONLY HAS 3 PLAYERS?

HOW DOES THE "WINNING THE BEST OF 7 MATCHES APPLY?

The short answer is "yes, the other matches count as forfeits if a team has only 3 players".

Remember these rules....

#1    A team must have at least 3 players to be considered a team.  So, if you have only 1 or 2 players, it's impossible to win a TEAM match.

#2    If neither school competing against each other have at least 3 players on their teams....There is no TEAM winner (it's basically a scrimmage) because neither school had enough players to have a team.   However, their individual match results are important when it comes to seeding for the INDIVIDUAL District, Regionals, etc.

#3    Anywhere there is no player listed on a 5 singles and 2 doubles scoring sheet, the match is a default, or loss.

#4    All of the rules above apply to the players who are physically in attendance at match, not just on your roster.

In other words, if you have 5 players on your team, but only 2 show up for the match, you cannot list your 3 no-show players and count them as "wins by default" against a team with fewer players.

It can get a little confusing when schools have different numbers of players, so below, I went through some scenarios of match scoring.

Let me know if this is helps or if you have any more questions.

SCENARIO  #1

If TEAM A has only 3 players, but TEAM B has at least 5, you will consider it a 5 singles and 2 doubles match (or 7 point match).

TEAM A with only 3 players will default, or lose the positions that they do not have enough players for...So, the default/lose the #4 singles, #5 singles and #2 doubles spots.

For example:

TEAM A                                                                v.             TEAM  B

#1 singles   J. Smith   wins  (6-0, 6-0)             v.           #1 Singles     M. Blake  Loses  (0-6), (0-6)

#2 singles   G.Jones   wins  (6-2)(6-4)            v            #2 singles     T. Lee loses (2-6), (4-6)

#3 singles   K. Harris wins  (6-4)(7-5)           v.           #3 singles     B. Johnson loses (4-6), (5-7)

#4 singles   no player  DEFAULT                    v.           #4 singles     C. Myers  wins by default

#5 singles    no player DEFAULT                    v.           #5 singles     T. Brown wins by default

#1 Doubles  Smith and Jones Win  (8-2)      v.           #1 Doubles   Blake and Lee   lose    (2-8)

#2 Doubles  DEFAULT                                      v.            #2 Doubles   Johnson and Brown win by default

MATCH RESULTS:  TEAM A with only 3 people WON with a score of 4-3.

SCENARIO #2

If both teams only have 3 players, then you would count 3 singles and 1 doubles (or a 4 point match....actually it's still essentially a 7 point match, but BOTH teams are defaulting the #4, #5 singles and the #2 doubles.

The tricky part about a 4 point match and both teams could win 2 matches and result in a tie and so we need to break that tie.

If this is the case, you would count number of individual games won in each match to determine the final outcome.

For example:

TEAM A                                                                v.             TEAM  B

#1 singles   J. Smith  wins (6-0, 6-0)             v.            #1 Singles     M. Blake  Loses  (0-6), (0-6)

#2 singles   G.Jones  wins  (6-2)(6-4)            v             #2 singles     T. Lee loses (2-6), (4-6)

#3 singles   K. Harris  Loses (4-6), (5-7)        v.            #3 singles     B. Johnson wins (6-4), (7-5)

#4 singles   no player  DEFAULT                    v.            #4 singles     no player  DEFAULT

#5 singles    no player DEFAULT                    v.            #5 singles     no player DEFAULT

#1 Doubles  Smith and Jones lose  (2-8)      v.            #1 Doubles   Blake and Lee  win (8-2)

#2 Doubles  No players DEFAULT                 v.            #2 Doubles   No players  DEFAULT

MATCH RESULTS:  SCORE:   2 - 2   (TEAM A has 2 win and TEAM B has 2 wins)

TO DETERMINE THE WINNER...

Count up the total number of individual GAMES each team won in ALL matches played.

TEAM A won a total of 35 games and TEAM B won a total of 27 games. THEREFORE, the winning team would be TEAM A.

SCENARIO #3

If TEAM A does not have AT LEAST 3 players, then it is impossible for them to win the match because in order to be truly a "team", the SCIAA rules state that you must have a minimum of 3 players on a team.

If a school does not have at least 3 players, their players can still compete in hopes to advance through the district and state tournaments in the "INDIVIDUAL" tournament, but with only 1 or 2 players on a team, it is impossible to win a match against another team.

If neither school has at least 3 players, the match is really just a "practice" match and no TEAM is declared the winner.  The head to head results are important, however for individual seeding at tournament time.

For Example:

TEAM A has only 2 players and  TEAM B has 3 players.  Although this looks like it ends in a tie (2-2), TEAM B is actually the winning team because TEAM A didn't

meet the minimum qualifications to be considered a team.

TEAM A                                                                    v.             TEAM B

#1 singles    Joe Smith  Wins   (6-0, 6-0)           v.             #1 Singles   Mark Blake   Loses  (0-6), (0-6)

#2 singles    Gary Jones Loses  (2-6, 4-6)          v              #2 singles   Tom Lee   wins    (6-2), (6-4)

#3 singles   DEFAULT/LOSS                                 v.             #3 singles   Brett Johnson wins by default

#4 singles   DEFAULT/LOSS                                 v.             #4 singles   DEFAULT/LOSS

#5 singles    DEFAULT/LOSS                                v.             #5 singles   DEFAULT/LOSS

#1 doubles  Smith & Jones win (8-5)                v.             #1 doubles  Blake and Johnson lose (5-8)

#2 doubles  DEFAULT/LOSS                                v.             #2 DEFAULT/LOSS

MATCH RESULT:  TEAM B wins by default (even though the score is 2-2) because TEAM A didn't have enough players.
